Reflection ExampleAs highschool progresses I keep asking myself the same question, “How do I complete all of my work and stay up to date with my friends and family without losing my mind?” I think parts of this book help address that question. I agree with her on almost every level. Yes, we do need to slow down and admire the sweet simplicity's of life. Yes, hustle culture is destroying work life balance to a point where having a healthy balance is a phenomenon. Yes, my life would almost definitely be less stressful if I turned off my notifications. Unfortunately, it is almost entirely impossible to do any of this. I can’t slow down if I give three assessments this week. Most people cannot afford to only work one job in today's economy and while I'm sure they would like to spend their time on only one job that they are passionate about, they can’t. I would really like to turn off my notifications and let myself relax after school but I have tests, homework, and projects which I am terrified of forgetting and getting a zero on.
The biggest problem I have with this book is not its premise, it's the idealistic nature of it. To put it bluntly, I can tell someone from California wrote this. Everything in her book is true and yet it is almost laughably achievable for the average person, which leaves very little coping strategies for me to use. Very few doesn’t mean none, her advice has influenced me to silence notifications for all social media that I post on. In the past I have been almost obsessed with checking and rechecking who has commented on and liked the things that I have posted. It stressed me out so much to see that a girl I liked or a friend I was reconnecting with hadn't seen it yet. Honestly looking back that's kinda ridiculous, I can talk to or hangout with these people all of their interactions are not on social media. All in all, while I didn’t take away much from this book, the things I did implement have made a small but still obvious change in my mental health and I am very glad I read it.
